Synthesized sound is generated in the Supercollider programming language. These synthetic sounds are based upon research of Japanese and European noise musics. Specifically, the apparent perceptual affects of spatiality that come from listening. Although various techniques may be employed to give rise to spatial sensations in sound, such as panning and reverb, I am interested in the peripheral noise that lies outside of the focus sound.
Connoted Topography uses texture and spatial arrangement/qualities to impress upon the listener a sonic terrain. The listener is able to navigate their position of a virtual 3D space using a simple graphic interface. Sounds which make up the composition are positioned within the virtual space that are come across, combining with other sounds close by. This is analogous to a Soundwalk where you move through a limited geographic area, registering the sounds of the environment.
